This incredibly rare photograph by Harry Cassie Best, a notable artist in Yosemite Valley and father-in-law to Ansel Adams, bears the "Best's Studio" stamp on the print verso, and was likely printed in the 1930s. Best's Studio was founded by the painter Harry Cassie Best in 1902. When Ansel Adams married Harry Best's daughter, Virginia, in 1928, he began selling his photographs through Best's Studio. In 1972, Best's Studio was renamed to the "The Ansel Adams Gallery".
This print was originally included in a family album, alongside other Yosemite images from the early 1930s, next to an image attributed to Ansel Adams.
This image is published in "The Popular Science Monthly", Volume 80, 1912, which is how we ascertained its authorship.
Harry Cassie Best was a notable artist in his own right, and well-known in the early 20th-century. President Theodore Roosevelt hung Best’s painting "Afterglow on Mount Shasta" in the White House and wrote Best a personal letter saying he would give it "the place of honor in my home".
