This is an extremely rare variant of an image published in Ansel Adams's first major publication, "The Four Seasons of Yosemite" in 1936. Given the size of this print, with an image size of 8.5 x 6.5 inches, this image may have been made on a glass-plate negative with the same camera that Adams used for his famed "Monolith" of 1927. Adams moved from glass-plate negatives to film negatives in the early 1930s, so this image likely dates to c. 1930. From a family album of travel photos dated to the 1920s and '30s, including early Yosemite photographs. Given that this photograph is unsigned, it could have been printed by an employee of Best's Studio, similar to how Adams's later special edition prints of the 1960s and '70s were produced.1of 2
