This vintage silver gelatin contact print possesses exceptionally rich tones and color—exhibiting its age in the most elegant ways. Of the many desert scrub photographs, this is—to us—his most successful: the leaning branches on either side contain the sky, which—bearing similar tones—seems to melt into the sand dune as though it were a single substance, a single backdrop for the silhouetted scrubs to position themselves with careful balance. This print is mounted to a thin, early board, bearing a signature and date in pencil recto. Brett made this image when stationed in El Paso, Texas during the war.
