This four-part grid of oval New Series prints is, according to legendary Watkins scholar Peter Palmquist, likely unique. Rarely do these small-format ovals, which were conventionally pasted in travel albums throughout the 1880s, survive with such vivid tones. Smaller prints by Watkins are no lesser of artistic achievements—they offer more nuance to Watkins’ unparalleled vision. Each print is pasted to an album leaf with a title in ink and gold gilt under or above the print edges; while it is likely that each print is signed and titled on the reverse, we have no way of knowing without unmounting. This grid sets itself apart as a pair of perfectly-aligned panoramas. The top-two images, made at different locations along Moran Pt, show two waterfalls—Yosemite Falls and Nevada Fall, composed wonderfully between the shadows of a cliff and silhouetted trees. The bottom-two images are varied views from Union Pt, with dramatic cliffs abutting each end and a continuous horizon across the two compositions.
